Female identity in the tea meeting conversations

Abstract

The tea meeting is considered as an evening only for women during the afternoon where tea is the main drink. It also represents a meeting place and intimacy between women. For this reason, the present study sought to analyze how the tea meeting generated a space in which women, through discourse, such as conversation topics, represented and constructed their identity. This research is descriptive qualitative. The technique that was used was the focus group. Women of three generations were selected since female identity is a concept that varies from one generation to another. He worked with three groups, each of six women belonging to three generations. The age ranges were twenty-five, fifty and seventy-five. The main results showed that the discourse in this type of meetings allows women to signify and represent both the social structure and their own identity. It was also found that the tea evening as a group allowed identification among its participants. The women shared group characteristics that determined and contributed to the sense of their identity. Another finding was that the space of the tea meeting allowed women to make a representation of their social reality. It was also discovered that these meetings made possible the satisfaction of sentimental needs. Finally, the results show that the meeting generates an ideal interaction meeting making possible the elaboration of the feminine identity.
