Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the relationship between certain family factors (link between members, parenting style, training, educational policy, transmitted values) and substance use. The sample was composed of 1143 adolescents from the city of San Luis, Argentina. Two instruments were applied: an adaptation of the Comprehensive Clinical Evaluation Sheet (FECI, Chilean Institute of Integrative Psychotherapy, 1995) and the Drug Dependency Identification Questionnaire (Fantin, CIDD, 2004). The results indicate that male adolescents, compared to women, have a higher consumption of harmful alcohol. Regarding family factors, it was found, among others, that an inconsistent educational policy is linked to higher alcohol consumption and that adolescents who claim to have values different from those transmitted by parents have higher scores on alcohol consumption. Non-adolescent adolescents also have a better quality of relationship with the mother and a better perception of the mother figure than adolescent drug users.
