Coping strategies in relatives of children in foster care in the city of La Paz, Bolivia

This research describes the coping strategies of family members who assume the care and upbringing of children. The type of study is non-experimental, with a quantitative, descriptive approach made up of people who are in the judicial process of provisional guardianship. The Brief COPE Inventory was applied, which is based on the cognitive-transactional model and Carver's three-dimensional classification of types of problem-centered, emotion-centered, and avoidant/dysfunctional coping within the framework of Law No. 548 for family reintegration. A descriptive design was used, with a sample of 40 family caregivers. The results showed a relatively balanced coping profile between the three dimensions, with a slight prevalence of emotion-centered, problem-focused over-focused coping, and avoidant/dysfunctional coping. The low use of Active Coping (Low level) was highlighted, compared to the generalized use of Emotional Support (Medium level). It is concluded that caregivers present a predominantly passive pattern, explainable by the low perceived controllability of the judicial process and by the simultaneous overload of roles, rather than by an individual deficit of psychological resources.
