Abstract

In most western countries the number of households that have pets, mainly dogs and cats, has grown steadily in recent decades. However, the use of the term pet has received several questions while not respecting the integrity of the animal. Instead, many authors have opted for the use of the companion animal expression, which would connote a more egalitarian relationship. However, this expression has also received questions and is not necessarily interchangeable with the term pet. Pet versus companion animal seems to reflect the dual way in which these animals are considered and treated. Developments are presented on the origin of pet ownership and its historical evolution, and are discussed based on the most recent cultural changes. Finally, as a conclusion, the potential of these animals to confront people regarding their anthropocentric positioning within the world is highlighted, fostering a more egalitarian approach to animals and the natural world.
