Abstract

The prevalence of adults who perform insufficient physical exercise to obtain health benefits is high. There are numerous factors related to the maintenance of physical activity. Among them, personality traits may favor or hinder regular exercise. However, there is little documented evidence for the Latin American context. The aim of the present study was to describe the associations between personality traits, physical activity levels and sedentary behavior in adult residents of the province of Buenos Aires. A total of 376 individuals participated by completing the Big Five Inventory and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire in its abbreviated versions. Analyses of associations and comparisons between traits and physical activity measures were performed. Positive correlations were found for physical activity with the traits of extraversion and openness, whereas negative correlations were observed with neuroticism. In addition, it was evident that participants with higher levels of physical activity had higher scores on extraversion, agreeableness, and openness to experience, whereas those with lower levels of physical activity showed higher scores on neuroticism. The current findings are consistent with previous research conducted in different populations.
