Psychological responses to teleworking during the health emergency: work–family interaction and stress in the Chilean population

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the psychological processes associated with perceived stress, coping strategies, and the work–family interface among individuals engaged in teleworking during the public health emergency. A quantitative study was conducted using a non-experimental, descriptive-correlational, cross-sectional design. The sample comprised 312 adults residing in Chile, selected through non-probability convenience sampling. Data were collected using a self-administered online questionnaire that included the Global Perceived Stress Scale (GPSS), the Brief COPE, the SWING questionnaire, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, Student’s t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and hierarchical linear regression. The findings showed that higher levels of perceived stress and the use of dysfunctional coping strategies, particularly self-blame, were associated with greater work–family conflict, whereas religiosity emerged as a protective factor. In addition, women and individuals with caregiving responsibilities reported higher levels of perceived stress and work–family conflict. These findings provide empirical evidence to inform organizational and public policies aimed at promoting psychological well-being, work–family balance, and mental health in remote work settings.
