Abstract

Adolescence is one of the most complex stages in human identity formation, and this process currently unfolds largely within the realm of digital social networks (DSNs). Following the PRISMA-ScR protocol, this comprehensive systematic review examines and maps the empirical evidence published between 2015 and 2024 on the influence of DSNs on adolescent identity formation, from a social psychology perspective. After applying predefined eligibility criteria, 42 studies were selected and analyzed from the Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Redalyc databases. The findings were organized around three central thematic areas: (a) construction and management of the digital self, (b) social pressure and interpersonal comparison, and (c) identity polarization and group affiliation. The evidence shows bidirectional effects, modulated primarily by gender, culture, and platform usage time. Negative associations linked to identity instability and deterioration of self-esteem predominate; the implications for psychosocial intervention in educational contexts are discussed, formulating recommendations aimed at future longitudinal research.
